Calvin is a senior from Proviso West.
OES: What was your mindset when you first came to Ombudsman?
CH: I didn’t know what I was going to do. I thought Ombudsman might be like a military school. I found out it’s not like that at all.
OES: What are some of the things you like about OES?
CH: I like that it’s quiet, I can concentrate more. And I like the short days.
OES: What do you find difficult?
CH: Sitting in one place for three hours can be hard.
OES: Do you feel you are doing better academically here?
CH: Yes! Especially in certain subjects like chemistry.
OES: Why do you think that is the case?
CH: First, I can take my time if I need to. I can do the lesson more than once. And if I don’t get it there are teachers to help.
OES: What are some things you miss about West?
CH: I miss not seeing some people I know. And I must lunch and gym. I miss some teachers too.
OES: Tell me about your teachers at West.
CH: They are good. But if you didn’t get something, they couldn’t always stop and help you because they had so many students. Here, I get more help.
OES: Are there other differences?
CH: I feel better about myself.
OES: I know your mom is a fan of our program.
CH: Yes. She told my dean my grades and attendance are better since I’ve been here.
OES: Why did you choose “BELIEVE” for the caption on your poster?
CH: There’s no need to go down a bad road. You just have to believe in yourself.
